Travel experts recommend getting travel insurance before 4th of July weekend – FOX13 News Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The July 4 holiday travel period begins Thursday and 47.9 million people are expected to travel according to AAA.

3 million people are expected to fly in the skies, but concerns grow after thousands of flights were canceled over the Memorial Day, June 19 and Father’s Day holiday weekend .

Travel experts suggest travelers purchase travel insurance to make their Independence Day weekend go a little smoother.

FOX13 reporter Shelia O’Connor spoke to Omar Kaywan, co-founder of Goose Insurance, about the importance of travel insurance.

Kaywan said that in most cases, travel insurance helps ensure you don’t lose thousands of dollars if something goes wrong with your trip, like a canceled flight.

“You have purchased your ticket and you have also purchased the hotel and your accommodation is non-refundable, your flight ticket is non-refundable and the insurance will cover the non-refundable cost of the entire trip”, Kaywan said.

Kaywan suggests using a third party to purchase your travel insurance instead of using what the airlines suggest.

Kaywan told FOX13 that buying insurance from a third party gives you more time to go through the policy and make sure what you need to be covered is covered.

With airlines, Kaywan said most passengers are pressed for time and cannot thoroughly check the policy.

“When I buy a ticket it gives me a 10 minute timer before the screen disappears. Now you buy something and you don’t even get a chance to check what type of font it is , who is the provider? How do I make claims? What am I covered for? What are the solutions? These are the most important aspects you need to consider when buying travel insurance,” said Kaywan.

Depending on your trip, Kaywan told FOX13 that a travel insurance policy can be quite inexpensive.

“An average trip is around $2000-3000, for a 7 day trip you might be looking at $40-50. That’s really not a lot of money when you look at the grand scheme of things,” Kaywan said.

Kaywan also mentioned that in most cases, it only takes a few minutes to get an insurance policy for your trip.

“You can buy travel and medical insurance in less than 60 seconds, while you wait for your flight to take off,” Kaywan said.

Kaywan said it’s important for travelers to be proactive because once a flight is canceled it’s usually too late to purchase a travel insurance policy.
