Top Questions About Travel Insurance For Vacation Travelers

Q: Does InsureMyTrip have policies that cover a quarantine required if I contract Covid-19 while traveling?

A: The short answer is yes. “A doctor-ordered quarantine can be covered by travel insurance. Comprehensive plans can help you reimburse additional accommodation costs if a doctor asks you to quarantine yourself while traveling.

Quarantine should be listed as a covered ground in a policy under Travel delay and Trip interruption blanket. It is also important to understand how “quarantine” is defined in a policy, the limits of coverage provided, and whether it will cover certain situations such as self-isolation or stay-at-home orders.

Q: What happens if a county closes while traveling?

A: Closing a country before departure is not a reason covered by the General Trip Cancellation coverage. A Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR) policy may be the only way to have coverage in case you need to cancel your trip for this reason. CFAR can offer you the greatest flexibility if you cancel at least two days before your departure for travel for something other than a covered reason listed in the policy. If the borders and / or the country close while you are there, it may be best to seek assistance from the United States Embassy at your location and contact the assistance service provider listed on your policy. . They may be able to help you organize emergency transport (although at your own expense) to get home.

Q: Who is eligible for Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage?

A: There are several eligibility conditions for CFAR protection. They can require travelers to insure 100% of their prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses. CFAR coverage must be purchased as part of a comprehensive travel insurance plan, within 10-21 days of initial travel payment / deposit. InsureMyTrip has a new tool which makes it easier for travelers to find out if they are eligible for CFAR. (see below for more information on CFAR)

Q: What if I contract a Covid-19 infection while traveling?

A: Providers offering comprehensive travel insurance plans on InsureMyTrip.com can cover Covid-19 like any other covered unforeseen illness. So, if you contract Covid-19 before a trip and a doctor confirms that you cannot travel, you may have coverage to cancel your trip.

If you become ill during your trip, there may be coverage if you need to interrupt your trip. Again, you would need proof from a doctor.

In addition, emergency medical benefits may be available to help you reimburse expenses if you see a doctor or must be hospitalized due to COVID-19. In all cases, your policy will need to be purchased before any covered issues are known.

Cancel for any reason:
Canceling for any reason (also called: CFAR) is an optional upgrade. CFAR offers the greatest flexibility in trip cancellation and is the only option available to cover the fear of Covid-19 travel. Full coverage conditions will be listed in the state specific policy. If the eligibility requirements are met, reimbursement is typically 50% to 75% of the cost of the insured non-refundable prepaid trip if all eligibility requirements are met (available in most states).

Please note: the guarantees are governed by the specific regime certificate. Traditional travel insurance does not offer cancellation coverage for fear of travel, whether related to COVID-19 or not. Canceling for any reason is required.
