Wisconsin authorities warn of fake tax collection letters

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Commerce, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is warning taxpayers after several people reported receiving letters related to debt collection cases taxes.

The letter also says it is from the Dane County Tax Processing Unit and is a final payment notice, with a number to call.

The language of the letter sounds official and creates a sense of urgency by threatening to seize property, and even seize wages and bank accounts for unpaid debts.

However, the letter is not real and the DATCP claims that these scammers can target victims by searching court documents for people who are suing them to collect taxes.

Anyone with questions should contact this agency directly, and use a phone number or email address that you know is correct, and not use any contact information provided by the questionable, letter, text, or email address. phone call.

Another tax warning – the IRS urges you to be on the lookout for child tax credit scams.

Millions of families received their first payments on July 15, either by direct deposit or by check.

The monthly payments are part of the COVID-19 relief program, with the goal of reducing child poverty.
