Dozens of state GAs survey Rent-A-Center’s FinTech unit

By Elise Hansen (Nov 5, 2021, 7:15 p.m. EDT) – Rent-A-Center revealed on Friday that its fintech subsidiary, Acima, is under investigation by nearly 40 state attorneys general over its business practices , which are also under the supervision of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Rent-A-Center Inc., headquartered in Texas, said in a regulatory filing that it received a letter from the Nebraska Attorney General on November 1 stating that dozens of other state attorneys general have banded together in a multi-state investigation into “Acima’s business acts and practices.”

The file did not provide further details on the nature of the investigation, and representatives for Rent-A-Center and Acima did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
