Croatian pensioners can apply for free supplementary health insurance

April 2, 2022 – Croatian pensioners, as well as other groups of persons legally residing in Croatia, can now apply for free supplementary health insurance coverage (dopunsko zdravstveno osiguranje) through the Croatian Health Insurance Fund, HZZO .

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the HSU (Croatian Pensioners’ Party) has called on all Croatian pensioners, but also other residents to whom this very welcome new rule applies, to ensure that they take advantage of it to exercise their right free complementary health insurance.

Many Croatian pensioners, as well as other groups of individuals who fall into the category of persons to whom this applies, have still not exercised their right to supplementary health insurance at state expense and risk pay unnecessarily, if they already have. Amendments to the Voluntary Health Insurance Act that came into force in November last year, initiated by HSU, raised the threshold.

This new free policy for an additional form of health insurance through HZZO can be taken by anyone with an income of up to 2,065.60 kunas per family member, or 2,582 kunas for a single person.

If this is you, then what should you do?

If you are a Croatian pensioner or belong to one of the above-mentioned categories of persons, you can go to the nearest local HZZO office and fill in the appropriate form to conclude your supplementary health insurance contract at state expense. A clerk working there will be able to point you in the right direction and guide you through the process and what to expect from it if necessary.
